Empowerment Projects:

In addition to the basic classroom supplies being provided, the project means a lot to me specifically because of the texts that can be provided. As teachers, we try to expose students to more rigorous texts that are relevant to what they are learning. Studies show that when this exposure is done, it can help students build their comprehension and increase their reading level. Due to some changes that took place at my school this past year, ready access to these texts were not available. Without this opportunity through SIFT Foundation, these texts may not have been secured in time.

This project is special because I love teachers and like to love on them. SIFT foundation is helping me do that. When the teachers are taken care of, the students are taken care of because they are the ones who spend all day with them. Having been in the classroom as recently as last year, I know how much money is spent on everyday supplies. It feels good to have the opportunity to support and lighten the load of the most important people in our children’s lives.

Last year, the school board funded the schools for personalized learning. For my students, that meant they received a Chromebook from which they could access their textbooks. There are no longer physical textbooks. They can use the Chromebook at school and home, but they have access to Wi-Fi to use it. Unfortunately, some kids don’t have Wi-Fi at home, so they are unable to access their textbooks from home or play subject-specific games that help reinforce what they’ve learned.

Additionally, the technology teacher resigned this year, and funding was not provided to replace him because of the projected number of students attending the school. With the headphones taken care of, the students will be able to study on their own while at school, have fun while they learn, avoid the embarrassment that can come with knowing that others can hear when a question is answered incorrectly, and concentrate on concepts that may be difficult to grasp. With all the other things the budget has to cover, headphones are not at the top of the funding list. However, I have two autistic children who have to do most of their work on the Chromebook and can concentrate and learn better with headphones – the funding of this project would mean the world to me and would make a world of difference in their learning experience. It is heartwarming to know that there are people who are working on our behalf to ensure that students have what they need to learn in a way that considers their individual needs.
